Topic driven content

Now that internet technology has enabled sites to take advantage of dynamic content and new features, you must decide if these are these really appropriate for your site? If you have an art site, offering pictures of your work pretty much exceeds normal graphic content restrictions. Obviously, visitors to your site want to see your work and are willing to wait for pictures to download. If you are offering multimedia productions, the same holds true - people expect to see samples of your work and are willing to wait for that. But if you are selling widgets, do people want to watch a movie about the production of widgets - probably not.

And if someone is interested in listening to music while surfing the internet, they probably already have the stereo on and don't really need to wait for a 50k sound file that loops repetively while they are on your site. On the other hand, if you are selling music, you will need to provide samples and the visitor expects to wait for that.

Hi-tech web technology is of more interest to the people developing it than to the ones who have to wait for it to download. I do agree that there are site who could use new technologies if technology is what they are selling. Most users are more interested in your content and your ability to offer good customer service than they are in your use of the latest Web technology.

I like to stay current with what's new and innovative and try to find valid uses for it, but you must accommodate those who have chosen the path of pure information. Remember that the most important thing you have to offer is your content. If you don't need it - don't use it.
