Another Lidded Bowl

2014-05-20 12.54.56I didn’t have any planned use for this bowl except to use a piece of very swirly grained walnut. Since it was a 1″ board I needed to build it up and just adding another layer is the easiest way to do this. I thought I would band it at the seam but it didn’t seem to need that when I got it together. The top is a piece of Brazilian cherry that a friend gave me. It wasn’t very big but just the right size for a lid! I wish the grain had shown up in the picture — it is truly spectacular.  My only regret was that the spindle wasn’t more “delicate” but to tell the truth it is not glued in yet and I may still do that if I get the urge.

Guitar Inspired

2014-04-20 15.46.18I wanted to learn to do some inlay work. I found tortoise shell guitar banding and a very good price – direct from our friends in China! It’s amazing how cheaply you can get this stuff. It is a striking contrast to the blonde maple wood. This was a log someone gave me last year that I had rough turned and put aside to dry. This worked so well I can’t wait to do another. I also want to try inlaying some brass wire in darker wood. There is no end to what you can do!More Views and comments

Revisiting the Big Apple

2014-04-13 13.56.35I am drawn to the apple shapes and needed to incorporate this into one of my hybrid solid/segmented bowls. This one curves in at the top down into the recess where the top sits. I had it up to a high gloss with multiple coats of lacquer but decided that I wanted an organic apple – it’s just healthier, so I rubbed the last coat with some 1500 grit. Primarily walnut with ash and sycamore for the lighter pieces. About 9″ in diameter and 4.5″ tall — not quite the golden ratio but pleasing dimensions.More Views and comments

Hybrid Pot

2014-03-30 16.22.23This is a mix between a regular bowl and a segmented vessel. I had some 6/4 ash and with putting a 5/4″ ring in it I could get a pretty tall vessel out of two pieces of the ash. The band is walnut. The pot is about 6″ in diameter and about that tall to the top. I did spin about 17 coats of lacquer on it so it is very shiny! The only flaws I could find in this one were flaws in the wood. My first “factory first” pot? Maybe. More Views and comments

Another Benefit Bowl

ww1This is my favorite so far. The walnut has a deep luster and the ash has been sitting in my shop for 20 years. The walnut was a pretty gnarly chunk of wood but it put it’s best foot forward for a good cause.  I can’t even call this bowl a factory second. If you would like this bowl all you have to do is show up at Steve Price’s benefit in Trappe on April 16th and bid on it.More Views and comments

Another mistake driven project

2014-03-02 15.32.46This is my 3rd segmented bowl. The first two were 6 segments, this one is 8. I ended up with maple on the bottom since I blew a hole in the walnut at the last minute. In retrospect I wish I had used walnut to fix the hole but it is done now and I have moved on. Despite that I had a number of people who wanted it, I just can’t part with it yet. This is Maple and Walnut and about 9″ in diameter.

From Scrap to Finished Project

02241I wanted to try my hand at a segmented bowl. Well actually  my second since the first I thought of some shortcuts and as we know you can’t short cut quality projects. This time I didn’t skip any too many steps and came out with a perfectly fine (notice I didn’t say perfect) bowl. The light wood was some Sycamore that came out of a pallet and the Cherry all came out of the scrap box. There is some decoration in the rim that you can see if you zoom in.More Views and comments

It’s A Shore Thing

2014-01-19 15.04.10I had some ribbon striped mahogany that someone gave me that I wanted to mess about with. The mahogany end grain is a real bitch as the wood is so soft I just kept getting tear out so this one I decided to turn with the grain. And since mahogany is not all that appealing I put a few colors of dye on it. Darker would have been better but the effect is pretty nice. And since the box needed some sort of adornment I figured a shotgun shell would be apropos for the Eastern Shore More Views and comments
